The Devil Wears Prada 2 gets a little more gay! AND ASIAN? and we’re here for it! New Cast Members Announced!

Disney’s 20th Century Studios, backing the sequel to the iconic film The Devil Wears Prada announced several new cast members, including Simone Ashley (Bridgerton, Picture This), Helen J. Shen (Broadway’s Maybe Happy Ending), the legendary Lucy Liu, and CONRAD RICAMORA!

The roles for these new additions have not been clarified yet, but we do know that Meryl Streep will be returning and facing off against her former assistant, Emily Blunt, struggling with the decline of traditional magazine publishing. David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna, the original director and original screenplay writer, have both returned for the sequel. Streep already has us sold, and the return of Frankel and McKenna is reassuring, but this recent announcement has us more than confident that the film will not disappoint!

Simone Ashley captivated audiences with her roles in Sex Education, Bridgerton, and more recently, Picture This. Outside of her filmography, she’s shown stunning us looks and talked about branching into music and her upcoming debut album with Harper’s Bazaar UK! We can’t wait to see what kind of role is in store for her!

The next addition to the cast is Helen J. Shen, a musical theatre thespian who recently debuted on Broadway’s Maybe Happy Ending opposite Darren Criss (Glee lied and he’s not gay, but Blaine will forever be remembered). Maybe Happy Ending received 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which stands as a true testament to Shen’s skills.

Lucy Liu. Lucy LIU. LUCY LIU! An AAPI Hall of Famer, and we cannot wait to see her in this sequel! A standoff between her and Meryl would be everything! Two powerful women, palpable passive aggression, witty quips, and iconic looks? This is the drama we live for! I know we disclosed that the main power struggle in the movie would be between Streep and Blunt, but a third party always makes for a good scandal, and who better to do that than Lucy Liu!

And now for the gay cherry on top, Conrad Ricamora! The one we fell in love with in How to Get Away with Murder and continued to make us fawn over him in Fire Island and How to Die Alone! Did you know he sings too?! Fresh off his Tony Award win for his performance in Oh Mary!, Ricamora is the jack of all Trades! (Also now noticing there is a lot of musical talent in this film – and while I love a good musical, this sequel better not be one) Conrad is also a great deal better looking than the original movie’s love interest for Andy (although we may be a bit biased here). I wonder what his role would be. While he plays the intellectual very well on screen, I think it’d be cool to give us some Himbo vibes! A sexy, strong, and confident type would be a win and something we haven’t seen from him on the big screen just yet.

A gay can dream, but so far this new cast announcement is very promising for the sequel, and I hope they all have substantial parts that are equal to their talent. But again, a gay can dream and we hope this helps fill the hole in queer AAPI representation!
