Following Bowen’s recent Emmys nominations, he hosts an awards ceremony of his own with podcast co-host Matt Rogers.
On July 17th, Las Culturista’s Culture Awards were held at The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. Las Culturistas is a podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, awarded the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Podcast, that has been giving a breakdown on pop culture since 2016. The Culture Awards, hosted by Bravo TV, is an annual ceremony that celebrates pop culture’s most iconic moments and is known for its unique award categories. The awards ceremony itself is kind of a statement to satirize Hollywood’s awards and has now finished its fourth run this past Friday.

We love a good backdrop on the and a fun color for the carpet! However, the overall capet line-up for something as iconic as an award ceremony that celebrates pop culture has found me wanting. While the awards and their nominees don’t necessarily require certain celebrities, community leaders, or influencers to be at the event, the crowd seemed a little lackluster. Hosted in Los Angeles, where there are a plethora of the aforementioned, you’d think the event would warrant a bit more star power on the red carpet. Influencers are literally dying to get a Getty photo nowadays to help legitimize their claim in the industry, giving free publicity to any event they are invited to.
The event already has a slight buzz because of the Jamie Lee Curtis V. Yang & Rogers debacle, but my qualm lies with the fact that we can literally count these Queer AAPI red carpet attendees on my hands. If you count Mindy Kaling and Mitra Johauri in our AAPI count, that brings the AAPI talent present to 8. Maybe this is just a giant scheduling conflict, and a lot of people were not available to attend, but I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed.
The man who made history as the Emmys’ most nominated Asian American actor hosted an event where representation itself was minimal. I do know that Bowen probably had nothing to do with the guest list, and that maybe there were other celebrities/influencers that didn’t want to take red carpet photos (or I just missed/didn’t see more photos – although I did scan all 321 Getty Images from Olivera), but some optics should always be considered.
The Culture Awards will be streaming on Bravo and Peacock on August 5th, so more opinions may follow.
